Too soon, Rich Homie Quan passed away. At the age of 34, the rapper passed away on September 4. He leaves a legendary legacy of 2010 singles and guest verses that steal the show. Still, there was more music in the vault for him. Rich Homie Quan’s first posthumous track, “Song Cry,” has been released. It’s unclear if the song is supposed to serve as the lead single for a whole posthumous album, but it’s a heartfelt track that is more difficult to listen to now that the rapper is no longer with us.
“Song Cry” lives up to its melancholic and poignant title. Even more, Rich Homie Quan talks about how people view his biggest hits and exhorts them to give this particular release more thought. It is easy to understand why. It features Quan leaning into the more strained portions of his voice and is powered by a driving drum beat and tinkling piano. When he raps about the challenging things he has gone through in his life, he is truly exposing his emotions and singing voice. “I know you hear that sh*t, this is a song cry,” he declares in the pre-chorus. “Hear the song cry out loud. You must experience that shit. During the song, Rich Homie Quan even occasionally sounds like Young Thug, his old Rich Gang teammate.
