2024 has proven to be an exceptionally contentious year for hip-hop, a fact that is almost self-evident. The multitude of conflicts observed by both fans and artists is striking, yet it also evokes a sense of disappointment. While the competitive spirit has undeniably contributed to a resurgence of the genre following a lackluster 2023, the desire for a more vibrant period has certainly come with its own set of challenges. The most notable consequence is the dissolution of remarkable collaborations. Drake’s ongoing rivalries with numerous MCs and related artists have significantly diminished the likelihood of potential partnerships. Once-close associates like Metro Boomin and Future have now become adversaries.
While there is much more to discuss, our attention must now turn to Gunna and Young Thug, who have recently found themselves in conflict following a tweet from the YSL leader that was quickly deleted. “Gunna stop acting like we friends on the internet, I don’t know u my guy,” he posted shortly after his release from the RICO trial. Gunna has not yet addressed the situation, but it is highly likely that he shares a similar sentiment. This situation prompts nostalgia for their previous collaborations, such as “Lesbian,” which now feel like a distant memory. Although the track is produced by Metro Boomin, the synergy they exhibited during their collaborations was truly exceptional. Typically, time has a way of mending relationships, and one can only hope that this will be the case here.
