Lil Nas X finds himself in a compelling position. A few years ago, he was a record-breaking sensation, yet he has faced challenges in producing a follow-up album. His promotional singles have not resonated as anticipated, and he has encountered criticism for allegedly depending too much on controversy to market his music. However, Lil Nas X is adopting a new strategy with his latest releases. He seems to be prioritizing the quality of his music, as demonstrated by his initial DREAMBOY single, “LIGHT AGAIN!.” Now, he has introduced his second track, “NEED DAT BOY,” which is another success.
“NEED DAT BOY” offers a contrasting vibe to the upbeat, club-oriented “LIGHT AGAIN!” with its slower, more sensual tempo. It stands out as one of the most opulent R&B ballads Lil Nas X has produced thus far, complementing his vocal style remarkably well. While it may not break new ground in terms of lyrical content or delivery, it is executed with finesse. Lil Nas X possesses a talent for discovering catchy elements within his instrumentals, and this is evident in his vocal execution on “NEED DAT BOY.” Although it may be challenging to envision this track achieving the same level of success as hits like “Old Town Road” or “Industry Baby,” this does not detract from its quality. Lil Nas X has significant expectations to meet with his upcoming album, and he is currently on the right track.
