GloRilla has garnered numerous accolades in the form of nominations, awards, and plaques throughout 2024. She subtly acknowledges this achievement in her new song, “Xmas Time.” The lyrics reflect her sentiment: “And I might’ve had a Christmas that I ain’t get a thing that was on my wish list / I celebrated still because I knew that I was gifted / (Put that on the gang) / I’m just one of God’s children.” This marks the Memphis artist’s inaugural attempt at a holiday-themed track, which features an intriguing twist in its latter half. Kehlani, a first-time collaborator, contributes a melodic and heartfelt chorus.
This collaboration is partly responsible for the unexpected direction taken in the second half of the song. With regular producers such as Ace Charisma and Yo Gotti involved, there were certainly questions regarding the song’s trajectory. Ultimately, it evolves into a Memphis trap Christmas anthem. The combination of bells and piano keys complements the heavy bass and kick drums that are characteristic of the city’s hip-hop scene, as Big Glo adopts a slightly more mature tone compared to the first half. Although the song presents a blend of various styles and sounds, it conveys meaningful messages and personal elements that embody the Christmas spirit.
