Oyinkansola Sarah Aderibigbe, better known as Ayra Starr, is an Afrobeats musician who has expressed her preference for Ghanaian jollof rice over its Nigerian counterpart.

Social media users have been debating which nation produces the best jollof rice for a while now, with supporters from Ghana and Nigeria frequently taking sides. The “Bad Vibes” singer stated that she enjoys Ghanaian jollof rice because of its garnishing in a recent appearance on BET Amplified. The 21-year-old also discussed how the customs surrounding jollof rice differ in the two nations. She states her preference for a certain country’s jollof rice when asked. Ayra Starr expressed:

“I mean they are both really amazing. I grew up with Nigerian jollof rice. Nigerian jollof is practically called party rice, so people eat it at parties. It is like a celebratory food.”
“The culture around it is that they usually use a big pot to cook it outside, so it kind of burns and it is smoky. So it is smoky jollof rice, that is what it is called. Ghanaian jollof rice has like things inside but for Nigerian jollof, the protein, vegetables are outside if you are having anything else. So it is two different vibes.”
“Jollof from Ghana.”

They are both quite remarkable, in my opinion. I was raised on jollof rice from Nigeria. Nigerian jollof is typically consumed at celebrations; it is also known as party rice. It resembles a festive dish.

It is customary to cook it outside in a large pot, which causes it to burn and smell smokey. Thus, it is referred to as smokey jollof rice. In Nigerian jollof rice, the vegetables and protein are on the outside, unless you’re eating anything else. In Ghanaian jollof rice, the contents are similar. Thus, there are two distinct vibrations.

Ayra Starr rose to fame in 2021 with the publication of her popular song “Bloody Samaritan,” and she recently published her album “The Year I Turned 21.” She released her debut studio album, “19 and Dangerous,” in the same year. It included hits including “Away,” “Rush,” and “Bloody Samaritan,” which she later remixed alongside Kelly Rowland. Starr is one of the African artists who is developing the fastest, having won numerous honors.
