In May 2023, the father of producer Hit-Boy, Big Hit, was released from prison following a nine-year incarceration. As soon as he arrived home, he went straight back to work in the studio. The Truth Is In My Eyes was his debut album, co-created with his son. In January 2024, he released the joint album Paisley Dreams, a collaborative effort with renowned Compton rapper The Game. Subsequent to this, he collaborated on a joint album with both Hit-Boy and the renowned Alchemist. However, Big Hit was incarcerated again in October. The purpose is not immediately evident. In the meantime, his son is putting out new music in his father’s name.
“Biggest Life” is one of the 700 songs Hit-Boy’s father recorded in the last eighteen months. The beat is soulful, similar to some of the production that Hit-Boy did for Nas during their collaboration. He brings a West Coast perspective to it all, with a smooth flow reminiscent of an earlier era of California hip-hop. Hit-Boy, who has been rapping more frequently recently, also sounds at ease over the beat. He used to never leave the backstage area. It appears that those days are a distant memory. The accompanying video is filmed in a style reminiscent of classic music videos, with the artist rapping beside a lowrider and the footage shot on film. Hit-Boy delivers his verse in a barber shop, which is depicted in a black and white setting. The track concludes with footage from Hit-Boy’s childhood home videos, as his father is heard giving a message in them. Watch the film “Bigger Than Life” now.
